Final Day - Home Again

Final greetings to all, This will be the last post on this blog. Our trip home from Ohio was basically uneventful. There were the ususal expected minor delays for construction areas (tis the season). For lunch yesterday we stopped at a McDonald's just before we left Ohio where Char had the six piece chicken McNuggets with Sweet & Sour sauce and half of an order of medium fries. After that she looked at me and said, "I'm still hungry. Go get me a Hot Fudge Sundae." She finished that up and then we were back on the road again. After we got home and relaxed for a short while we met Alex and Margie for dinner at Denny's. They came back to the house and Alex stayed over.
This morning we took Alex over to church for Vacation Bible School and then this afternoon Char had the first session of her next round of chemo. This session will be once a week for three weeks. One week off. And then repeat four times. After that we don't know what is next.

Shalom and look for Char Updates in your e-mail from now on, Frank.

Day 7 - Columbus, Ohio

Oops, I forgot to do a post last night. Our drive to Columbus from Chicago was uneventful except for the various construction (destruction?) areas on I-70 this side of Indianapolis. We went through some of these frustrating construction zones where no one is working, (yeah, I know it's Sunday!) the road isn't really that bad, and there is no real reason why the speed limit should be or needs to be 45 MPH. Oh, well, that will always be one of my pet peeves I guess. When we got to the Tuttle Crossing Blvd. exit I said to heck with it and got off of I-270. I was just tired of interstate travel. We found a Mobil station, gassed up at $2.89, and came into the motel via side roads the back way. I was glad that we gassed up when we did as the prices elsewhere in the area are around $2.99 to $3.03.
Today we met with our finance guy for lunch at Schmidt's Sausage Haus in German Village just South of the center of Columbus. Their brat's are to die for. For dinner we met with the Barlows at Bob Evans and then went back to their apartment for some desert and conversation. A good time was had by all.
Tomorrow we are headed back home to Syracuse. We hope to get away before 9 AM and don't expect any problems on the way home. We should be home late afternoon or early evening. Char starts her next round of chemo treatments on Wednesday. If her blood counts don't go down we hope to leave for Virginia later this month for a family reunion/wedding anniversary celebration.
I will be ending entries to this blog tomorrow night or sometime Wednesday. Shortly after that those of you on the Char Updates distribution list will start getting e-mail updates again.

Day 5 - Near Chicago

Hi All,

We are now in Elgin, IL, just outside of Chicago where we are staying for the night. Our trip here was uneventful and, as usual, we shared the driving. We didn't get away from Minneapolis until late. As I was finishing up this mornings brief post Char came down from the room and said "look out here!". Andrew and Emily were checking out on their way to the airport for their trip to Hawaii. We had breakfast with Bobbie and Mike Webb and just as we were finishing up our meal Mike's brother Derek and his wife sue arrived for breakfast. I am not going to write any more for now. I will just post a few photos from the wedding. I tried to take candid shots and not copy any of the professionals shots.
This is a shot of the Webb contingent: Bobbie, Mike, Derek, Sue, Neil, and Graham.

The next shot is of Andrew and Char at the reception.

In the background you can see Andrew and his new father-in-law showing us how to get it on.

This shot includes Emily, Bobbie, and Mike dancin' the night away.

Who takes photos of a photographer, another photographer, of course!

Day 5 - Minneapolis to Chicago

Hi All,
I guess by now if you are checking regularly you will realize that I missed posting last night. The main reason for that is that it was this morning before we got back to the hotel. I will be posting pictures tonight after we get to Elgin, IL. That is a western suburb of Chicago. Char continues to do well, is begining to fill out and the weight gain continues. The wedding was great and we had a ball at the reception last night. Emily has a huge family and they are a fun bunch and the Webb contingent while small had a great time meeting and getting to know the Dalager family.

More tonight,
Frank

Third Day - Madison to Minneapolis

Hi All,
We arrived about 2:30 PM after getting our latest start yet. The good news was that the trip was uneventful. We had clear skies and light traffic. The really good news was that none of the construction on the trip tik showed up. We don't blame the AAA folks they are only reporting what they are told.
Shortly after we arrived Bobbie and Mike came down for a visit and we shared travel and other news. They had to leave after awhile to get ready for the rehearsal. We goofed off and I checked my e-mail, etc. We were the first to arrive for the rehearsal dinner. The others were still at the church or enroute. After awhile people began to wander in for the happy hour. Emily has a huge family. There are folks here from Ireland, Alaska, and everywhere in between. It was a large fun gathering and a good time was had by all. I only have one photo to share tonight as it is very late and you all would not recognize most of the folks in the photos I took today.
The photo below shows Andrew and Emily greeting the crowd at the rehearsal dinner.

Second Day - Toledo to Madison, WI.

Greetings to one and all and a happy Fourth of July. Well, we survived the second day of the trip with only one slight error in Chicago. I guess that when I-80 and I-90 split we were supposed to stay on I-80 and pick up the I-294 outerbelt. We stayed on I-90 and then picked up I-290 in the middle of Chicago. It saved us some change, I guess, as I-294 is a toll road. The traffic, while relatively heavy seeming to us, was probably lighter because of the holiday. I need to look at the mapping software and check very carefully where we are getting off of I-94 in Minneapolis as we don't really want to tour the city without an expert local guide.

Char is holding up really well. We went to a Perkins Restaurant just down the hill from the motel. I had their delicious senior potato pancakes while Char got outside of a chicken breast with brocolli and rice. For desert she had a large scoop of ice cream with hot fudge sauce on it.

No photos today. I will have some tomorrow night after the rehearsal dinner if I remember to take the camera.

Shalom, Frank

First Day Out - 7-3-07

We made it through to Toledo, OH. Well, actually, the motel is officially in Maumee, OH, but I doubt if anyone but the locals know where that is. However, thanks to Max Klinger of M*A*S*H fame pretty much everyone knows where Toledo is. We didn't run into much in the way of the expected construction. There was some, but hey, this is construction season. Char drove from after lunch in Erie through Cleveland until we got on the Ohio Turnpike. I needed to stop so that I could walk out the cramp in my leg that arrived in the middle of I-90 in Cleveland. Below is a picture of Char outside of the Frish's Big Boy restaurant where we had dinner. It is located just in front of the motel so we walked instead of having to drive somewhere.

Minnie Wedding Trip

We are off to Minneapolis, MN, on Tuesday, July 3rd, for the wedding of Andrew and Emily. Andrew is the son of our good friends Bobbie and Mike Webb. We will be driving out there in my trusty Sebring. This is the car that we took around the country last year on our cross country trip of 8,505 miles. (see http://mcdowelltrip2006.blogspot.com/ for info on that) We will be stopping in Toledo, OH, the first night. Madison, WI, the second night and then we will be in Minneapolis Thursday eve and Friday for the wedding. Saturday AM we will be leaving for home via Columbus, OH. We will stay near Chicago that night and then on to Columbus on Sunday. We will spend the day there on Monday lunching with our finance guy and then having dinner with my late mother's and our good friends the Barlows. Tuesday the 11th will see us headed home arriving late that afternoon. I will be updating this blog daily starting the evening of July 3rd. There should be pictures most days but definently on Thursday, Friday, and the following Monday.
